FAQ

Do you make custom work?

Yes, we do! We've made work for restaurants, coffee shops, B&Bs, and retailers. We've also taken corporate commissions for employee rewards and client gifts, as well as large scale art installations.

Get in touch at claypossibilities@gmail.com, and we can talk about your project.

Will you make me this thing I found on the internet?

Not that exact thing, no. That thing is a specific artist's work, and you should get in touch with them directly if you like their stuff.

I broke my favorite mug/vase/bowl/doodad. Can you make me a new one?

Maybe!

If it's our regular production work, then yes, we can. It'll take about 4-6 weeks.

If it's something we made as a custom item, or a collaboration we did with another artist, it may be exclusive to whoever we made the original for. We'll need permission from them to make another. We can ask them in your behalf and go from there.

If it's somebody else's work entirely, then no, we can't make you the same mug/vase/bowl/doodad. You should get in touch with them directly.

I have one of your mugs/vases/bowls/doodads. How can I get another one?

It depends! Email us a picture, would you?

If it's our regular production work, we probably have another on hand. You can check the webshop or come visit the studio to pick out another.

If it was a custom job, or a collaboration with another artist, we don't have one around. But we can check and see if whoever we made it for does. And if they don't, we’ll ask them if we can make you another.

I like your robot mugs. Can I get one that says "X"?

Sure! Robot is very curious and is always up for new experiences.

Do you do teach classes?

Yes! We have a collection of beginner friendly workshops that are offered several times a year. We can also schedule group and private classes. No previous experience is necessary, and we can always tailor lessons to your abilities and interests.

We are also offering week long retreats for the first time in 2026. You can learn more about them on our Classes page. If the dates we picked out don't work for you, get in touch; we can optionally schedule something for you and a batch of friends.

Me and nine of my friends/coworkers/sports buddies/family members would like to take a class. Can we?

Sure! Ten people is the max we can comfortably accommodate, so that's perfect!

What should I bring to class?

Just yourself. We will provide all tools and materials.

Make sure to dress in clothes you don't mind getting muddy. Also, clay is abrasive; it's a good idea to remove any rings or bracelets so they don't get scratched up.

Can I keep what I make?

Yes. At the end of class, you can let us know what you would like to keep and what you would prefer we recycle. We will glaze and fire your pieces in the kiln within 4-6 weeks, after which we will send you an email letting you know they’re ready. Pickup can happen anytime during our regular business hours. If you are traveling, you can pay to have us ship your pieces.

I bought one of your pieces. How do I care for it? Can my pottery go in the dishwasher? Can I microwave my pottery?

All of our pots are made to be used. Dishwashers and microwaves are generally safe. The only exceptions are pieces with gold luster or vintage decals, which may be damaged.

Gold should never be microwaved, as this can cause arcing. Actually, any pottery or ceramics with shiny metallic looking bits should stay out of the microwave. The shiny metallic looking bits are, I kid you not, real metal.

Vintage decals will not cause arcing, but they may get worn off in the dishwasher.

Pieces made from darker clays will not be damaged by dishwashing or microwaving. But! In the microwave they can get very hot. Be careful when picking them up. If you don't know what kind of clay your pot is made from, you can look at the bottom, where the piece hits the table. This area is bare, unglazed clay. Check the colour, and break out the oven mitts if necessary.

I broke my favorite mug! Can I fix it?

Eeh. Sort of.

If it's just a handle that broke off? Epoxy on the handle maaaaay work.  Use ceramic specific epoxy and please be careful with hot liquids. Glue won't be as strong as the original.

If it's the body of the pot that broke, you can still glue it back together with epoxy, but it's not really food safe anymore.

Do not continue drinking or eating out of a repaired pot. It’s best to retire it from food service. Perhaps it could start a new career as a planter or pencil holder.

Do you ship?

Yes, we ship Expedited through Canada Post. International shipping can be arranged by request.

Ouch!  Shipping is expensive.  Is there anything I can do to save on shipping?

Yes!  Six mugs ship for not much more than one mug. The more you can stuff in a box, the cheaper the average rate will be per item.

Other than that, no. We know shipping is expensive.  Twillingate is very far from everything, and we've only got one reliable carrier to work with. We do have a small business discount, which we pass on to our customers. But mostly it is what it is.

What if I order something and it breaks in the mail?

Our philosophy is if we packed it, we're responsible for replacing it. Snap a photo of the wreckage and let us know, and we'll get your replacement shipped as soon as possible.

Can I visit the studio?

Yes! We're open to the public year round, Wednesdays to Sundays. Our winter hours are 10-5, and our summer hours are 10-7.

When I come visit, where can I park?

The studio is in a pre-car building, in a pre-car town. There is space in front for one vehicle to pull over, but we do not have a parking lot or driveway.

There is lots of parking across the street by the Orange Lodge or at Foodland.

You can also walk. Most of Twillingate is within a half hour stroll of the rest of it, and we're on a stretch of road that hosts several shops, art studios, restaurants, a boat tour launch, and two museums. Lots of people park at one end and make a day of exploring on foot.

Is your building accessible?

Unfortunately, there are stairs to get in.

Can I use your bathroom?

Yes, we have a spacious and comfortable public bathroom.

English is not my first language. What languages can I expect service in when I visit?

Maaike speaks fluent French and terrible beginner German.

Jason doesn't, but will nod along enthusiastically in the background.

Is it okay if I watch while you work?

Yeah! Our studio has an open floor plan, and you can see us working at all stages of our process. Please ask any questions you like about how our work is made; we love an opportunity to nerd out about clay.

If you're especially interested in seeing the wheel in use, Maaike usually throws first thing in the morning and first thing after lunch.

Your building is cool. Can you tell me more about it?

It is! It's one of the oldest surviving buildings in Twillingate.

It was built in the 1860s as a merchants’ storehouse for Messrs. Waterman & Co. They had several premises in the Twillingate-Fogo area, and outfitted schooners for the Labrador fishery.

In 1868, the local branch of the Sons of Temperance bought it and renovated it for use as a meeting house. By the mid 1870s, the local branches of the Society of United Fishermen and the Loyal Orange Association were also housed in the building. Around this time is when the windows were installed; they're the ones we still have today.

In 1909, the Orangemen moved across the street into their newly built lodge, and sold their share in the building to the SUF. In 1917, the Sons of Temperance also moved out and sold their share to the SUF, who owned the building until 2003.

So it was mostly a lodge. But people who grew up here mostly tell us about the dances, from back before the school had a gym. There was a stage, and they hosted live music concerts. There was also a screen and movie projector; they showed everything from Elvis movies to Creature From the Black Lagoon.

What's your favorite thing to do in Twillingate?

Well the hikes are spectacular.

What's your favorite hike in Twillingate?

French Beach is a perennial favorite. And if you want a longer hike, the trail from Spillers Cove to Little Harbour is gorgeous.

Where can I eat in Twillingate?

Lots of places! The town's got a list here.

Special shout out to the upgraded ice cream selection at Stuckless Freshmart.

Is there anywhere else I can buy your work?

Not many!

Mostly we wholesale custom work. So if you see it in the studio, you're unlikely to find it elsewhere. And if you found one of our pots elsewhere, you're unlikely to find more here.

Who makes all of this anyways?

Literally just two of us.

But there are so many different styles?

We're both easily bored. Making a stupid number of different lines keeps us engaged, and besides, we enjoy the challenge.

When do you open/close for the season?

We don't! We're open year round. We usually take a holiday around Christmas/New Year's. And we close for our birthdays. Otherwise, we're here.

Can we be friends in Pokemon Go?

Aw, how sweet of you to ask! Our friend codes are 8279 5051 0197 and 0881 4632 2899.

Nice flowers.

Thanks! Maaike grows cut flowers at home, to decorate the studio and as art inspiration. She also keeps a container garden here at the studio. This year the plan is for marigolds, calendula, lilies, violas, and geraniums.

The planters for the containers are made from our studio’s scrap clay. You can buy a planter for 200$, or you can sign up for a class and make your own.
